Shah Rukh Khan is India’s ‘national obsession’

Perhaps the Twitter user Waad3d best summed up the subcontinent’s concern and devotion for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

Khan, India’s version of Tom Cruise, has been nursing a knee injury and there’s been worry he won’t be well enough to perform a dance routine in the finale at the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Toronto.

Although choreographer Shiamak Davar told the Star Wednesday that he was confident the “very professional” Khan will perform, Khan himself cast some doubt on Twitter Thursday.

“In hospital getting my knee taped up. Feeling awful not being fully fit for IIFA . . . as is attending after so many years . . . will try and do my best. Toronto knee or not here I come !!!” he tweeted early Thursday.
Many among Khan’s legion of followers have been anxious to see him perform at the awards because, in the past, he’s tended to avoid the event.

“SRK I love you so much,” wrote Waad3d, a Twitter user with a modest 13 followers, late Wednesday. “I am so happy to know that you can dance in IIFA. Inshallah your knee will be good.”
God willing indeed.

The 45-year-old Khan has tried to calm his fans, including the nearly 962,000 who follow him on Twitter.
It’s probably best that Khan does try to dispel any potential panic over his ailment. India is a country that takes seriously its icons in the billion-dollar film industry known as Bollywood.

In 2006, another film star, Amitabh Bachchan, checked into a Mumbai hospital complaining of stomach pain.
As word of Bachchan’s illness spread, with news he would need surgery, television crews camped outside, and his fans mobilized.

Members of the Amitabh Bachchan Fans’ Association staged a mahayagna, or grand sacrifice and prayer, for him. Others walked hundreds of kilometres to Mumbai with water brought from the sacred Ganges River. (Bachchan recovered.)

“I don’t think it’s the same because Shah Rukh Khan has not played up his health problems,” said Anna Vetticad, a Mumbai film critic.

Khan got his acting start in a New Delhi high school production of The Wiz and, while he may not be a household name yet in North America, he has no rival when it comes to celebrity status here.

“I am a national obsession,” he said matter-of-factly in 2007. “I’m priceless. I see myself as an employee of an image that’s being created onscreen. Shahruhk (sic) the celebrity is my boss. I would say that I am Shahruhk Khan’s agent, secretary, celebrity manager. I work very hard to ensure he stays at the top.”
Known for his gelled hair and trademark dark sunglasses, Khan enjoys an appeal across India’s class divide. The destitute love him and so do the filthy rich.

In 2009, Khan was travelling to promote My Name is Khan, his movie about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, when he was detained for questioning at a U.S. airport because his name matched someone on a watch list. In India, groups of men burned American flags after they learned of the incident.

In December, at a party held in Goa by the watchmaker Tag Heuer, 400 Indians wearing diamonds and Manolo Blahniks played the role of sycophants as Khan played volleyball and hosted a bikini contest.
Khan’s fans “love him like he is a member of the family,” said Anupama Chopra, the author of King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan.

On one occasion, Chopra watched a woman waiting outside a hotel in Chandigarh where Khan was staying. The woman looked educated and affluent and had a young boy with her.

“It turned out he was chaperoning her,” Chopra said. “She said to me that she believed Khan was God and she had just come to the hotel to speak with him and confirm it.”

Irrfan Khan and Resul get welcome by Mumbai Police

Imran, Aamir Khan together on screen for the first time.

The latest trailer of “Delhi Belly”, to come out July 19, will bring together Aamir and Imran Khan for the first time in a mock-argument over the colourful and lurid content of the adult comedy.

The trailer, shot by the film’s director Abhhinay Deo last week, is bound to raise more eyebrows than anything that has ever come out from the distinguished Aamir Khan Productions.

“Aamir wants the potential audience for ‘Delhi Belly’ to know that this is not a film for the squeamish or the purists. By bringing Imran into the discussion on aesthetics and how ‘Delhi Belly’ will reverse Aamir’s image as a producer, Aamir clearly wants to let the world know that ‘Delhi Belly’ is the ultimate culture shock for Aamir’s fans,” said a source.

“It’s all in fun. But it will shock Aamir’s and Imran’s fans out of their wits. Aamir has always been known to be this no-nonsense guardian-like figure to Imran… to see him let off a chain of maa-bahen gaalis in front of Aamir is quite an aesthetic shock,” added the source.

Apparently, Imran was hesitant about using the maa-bahen lingo in front of Aamir.

“But Aamir told Imran to relax and just let go. After that Imran did just that. When viewers see him mouthing those beep-beep sweet-nothings in front of Aamir they’ll simply freak out,” said the source.

When confirmation was sought on the gaali-quotient in the Imran-Aamir trailer from “Delhi Belly” co-producer UTV’s Siddharth Roy Kapoor and Deo, they both chose to remain silent. They’ve been told to maintain utmost secrecy about the shocker-trailer until it is aired.

Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan Enjoys Roadside Punjabi Food

Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan, the deadly Bollywood duo, who are soon to be seen in the Yash Raj Films flick, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’, have both being enjoying every moment of their shooting schedule in the hilly and the plain terrains of Northern India, and have also relished the road-side local eatery food during one of their schedules, which both enjoyed to the last bit of food on their plate!

Reportedly, the shooting of the flick was held in the beautiful hills of Mussourie, and after the shoot, the cast and crew were returning back to Chandigarh, by road, and on their way, they spotted a roadside local eatery, called a ‘Dhaba’, which had the most delicious Punjabi food, and would give any five-star hotel a run for their money!

Now, it so happened that both the stars were just keen to enjoy the delicious food, come what may. Probably the long drive, and then the aroma of the delicious food being cooked floating around in the misty air, was too much for the stars to resist.

Thus, the chauffeur was asked to stop the car at the Dhaba. As the two had the meal, they liked it so much, that according to some tabloids, they were unable to even walk straight after having the great Punjabi food there.

Now, that’s what we call a King’s meal, when one stuffs oneself so much that one can’t even walk, it is surely due to the food being that delicious! But, thinking of stars like Kat and Imran enjoying and relishing the Roadside yummy food, it surely is quite a bit of news isn’t it?

Shahrukh Khan to release autobiography soon

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who has been writing his autobiography since many years now, has revealed that his book is almost near completion and he would be releasing it very soon.

The book that has been christened “Twenty Years In A Decade” will focus on the life of the 45-year-old actor from the year 1991 to 2001.

“I am writing this book since more 10 years now. It is called ‘Twenty Years In A Decade’ because I felt that in 10 years, I’ve lived a life of 20 years between 1991 to 2001. It’s almost complete now and one of these days when I complete it, I will ask my writer friends to edit it and I’ll release it,” Shah Rukh told reporters here at an event to release Kanika Dhillon’s debut novel “Bombay Duck Is A Fish”.

“It’s a fun book and is about positivity and hope and its funny, like I am. I’ve written things about my life in a fun way. Very personal things are there in it, selective memories though. There is a chapter on journalism too,” he said.

Although the actor has written about various facets of his life in the book, his favourite chapter remains the one that mentions his parents, who passed away when he was quite young.

“One of my favourite chapters in the book is about my mother and father. Its eight pages long. Whoever writes a book for the first time, parents’ mention is always there,” said Shah Rukh.

Since he has already tried his hand at writing a book, when asked if he would ever venture into writing a film, Shah Rukh, who is a voracious reader, refused.

“That’s an expert thing to do. In every film I work, my inputs are always there but full script, I don’t think I know the science or the mathematics behind it. Anyone can write a story but its difficult to write a screenplay.”

“I don’t know it. Infact a matter of fact, If I get a chance, I would like to do a course of screenplay writing for one-two months. I have read a lot of books on that but I think you need someone to teach you, to actually learn it,” he said.
